Shirley Valentine
by Willy Russell
31st May & 3rd June 2000
Hidden inside Mrs Joe Bradshaw 42 year old mother of two grown-up children is the former Shirley Valentine longing to get out.
When her feminist friend offers her a free holiday in Greece, Shirley seizes the opportunity. Willy Russell wonderfully portrays, with humour, sympathy and insight, a woman breaking out of the mould cast for her by society.
Memorably filmed with Pauline Collins in the leading role, this touching and brilliantly funny play of selfdiscovery began life in 1986 at the Everyman Theatre in the home town of Willy Russell and Shirley Valentine, Liverpool.
