Cavalli’s opera is based on Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’ and premiered in 1651. The title refers to the nymph of classical mythology, who, after various entanglements with the Gods, is turned into a bear and finally a constellation to be set amongst the stars. The musicians of this production will be using original period instruments.
