Amid the pomp of the royal court in 18th-century Sweden, popular king Gustavo struggles to resist his consuming attraction to Amelia, his best friend's wife. Warned by a soothsayer of his impending death, Gustavo disregards the prophecy and prepares to attend a masked ball where tragedy awaits.
