Winter Season 2010

NanaNana

by Emile Zola adapted by Olwen Wymark

Wed 1st – Sat 4th December 2010 in The Main House
Wed, Thu at 7.30, Fri at 2.30 and 7.30 and Sat at 5.00pm

Nana is a parable for our times. Amid the greed and sexual hysteria of 19th-century Paris, Nana is a compelling force of Nature – actress, then courtesan, she rises through the ranks of society to the upper echelons where she devours men and their fortunes with neither malice nor regret. At the height of her powers, she is cut down by smallpox: a parallel for the collapse of Napoleon III’s debauched and corrupt Second Empire, and perhaps for our globally-driven ultra-consumerist society.

Wymark’s adaptation of Zola’s beautifully detailed Nana preserves the immediacy of the work for a modern audience.

Fires are becoming something of a problem around town, but Biedermann has it all under control. A respected member of the community with a loving wife and a flourishing business, he believes nothing can get to him. A model of middle-class decency, he is happy to fulfil his civic duty and give shelter to new houseguests who arrive unexpectedly one day.

And when they start filling his attic with petrol, he’ll help them wire the fuse...
