The Mikado

by WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan

Sat 30th April at 7.30pm 2011 in The Main House

Probably the most well-known of the Gilbert & Sullivan operas, 'The Mikado', written over 125 years ago, remains hugely popular and offers great entertainment for all the family.

Colourful, amusing and with a sparkling score, including numbers such as 'Three Little Maids', 'Tit Willow', 'The Sun Whose Rays', 'My Object All Sublime' and 'A Wandering Minstrel', the opera introduces a host wonderful characters who bring to life the story of Nanki-Poo, the heir to the throne of Japan. Nanki-Poo has left home to escape the attentions of and an arranged marriage with Katisha, an elderly Lady in his father's court and on his travels, disguised as a wandering minstrel, he has met and fallen in love with Yum-Yum. Sadly Yum-Yum is already engaged to her guardian, Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner of Titipu. So the complications begin, but it won't be a surprise to know that it all ends happily!

For this performance Alexandra Saunders (Yum-Yum) and Robert Jenkins (Nanki-Poo), BMus(Hons) students from the Birmingham Conservatoire are joined by principals and members of Derby Gilbert & Sullivan Company, six times winners of the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, held each year in Buxton. The company has recently performed 'The Mikado' in Gettysburg (USA) as well as at Buxton. The production will be conducted by Andrew Nicklin, Musical Director of the International G & S Festival.

This is a fully staged and costumed production for one night only and is expected to be very popular. You are advised to book early!

Bring the kids to discover the fun of G & S – the family ticket is great value.
