While many people inevitably want to act, there are usually more unseen roles than there are actors on stage.
Consider a typical play with about 8 - 10 cast members.
Behind the scenes on stage you will find a stage manager, probably one or two stage crew, someone in charge of props and a person on the "book", ready to give a prompt if needed.
Above the stage there may be a person in the fly gallery to operate the flying equipment, if scene changes require scenery to be flown in and out.
There will also be a lighting operator and a sound operator.
Front of house there will be a house
manager, three stewards, two people on the bar and one or two serving coffee.
In the run up to the opening, half a dozen people were probably involved in building and painting the set, which will have been designed by a set designer working closely with the director. Costumes will have been found or made in the wardrobe department and the staff and marketing team will have been deciding how best to "sell" the play.

The director and actors, together with the production assistant, will have spent about six to eight weeks rehearsing
.
At the end of the production run the stage has to be cleared and props, furniture, etc returned to the various stores. This strike often involves over a dozen people working late into the night, preparing the way for the following production which will often open only a few days later.
When you consider that we put on over fifteen productions in a year, often with shows
in the studio and main house at the same time, we need a LARGE membership to keep
everything running smoothly.
