Written in exile in 1941 just before Brecht’s arrival in the USA, THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI is a savage and witty parable of the rise of Hitler – recast by Brecht into a small-time Chicago gangster’s takeover of the city’s greengrocery trade. Brecht skilfully parodies and pastiches Shakespeare and Al Capone to create a hilarious yet chilling monster, whose unlikely, seemingly unstoppable – and yet, as the title tells us, still RESISTIBLE - rise to power carries a perennially resonant warning to us all: ‘the womb he crawled from is still going strong…
