Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt?
17 - 19 Apr in the Main House at 7.30pm | Matinee: Sat 19 April 2pm
By popular demand Stage2 revisit the work of our Patron Claire Dowie in an explosive reworking of her monologue that we first performed in 2004 to rave reviews.
An inspired idea. This radical material is a courageous choice for a youth theatre and it pays off brilliantly – both holding and challenging the audience in the way the best theatre should.
The Birmingham Post
Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt? is a powerful exploration of stereotyping and pressures to conform – a journey through a girl’s life that includes frustrated encounters with skirts, incredulous encounters with tights and disastrous encounters with boys. She gets through school by pretending to be in the Beatles and her first office job by pretending to be in the Army. With the exciting addition of a live band on stage, a huge cast of Birmingham’s best bring the perils of being a teenager hilariously and sometimes horrifically to life!
Make this compulsory viewing for young people all over the country.
Not only is it Stage2’s 25th year, this is also the 25th anniversary of Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt? Claire herself is undertaking a brand new tour of the piece in monologue form. It opened at the Edinburgh Fringe 2013 to great acclaim, an unprecedented 6 stars, awards and rapturous reviews.

One of the Fringe’s hidden gems – hilarious, angry, empowering, political, confused, tragic, subversive but most of all, human.
A truly unforgettable and unmissable play.
