Spanish Theatre Company presents

La Casa de Bernada Alba

by Lorca

3 – 4 Mar in the Main House

A drama of women in the villages of Spain. Lorca’s masterpiece, still relevant today, explores bullying, passion and conformity. The deliberate exclusion of a male character from the play heightens the sexual tension present. In Spanish.

Having sold out three runs in London, this 5 star production comes to Birmingham.

An acknowledged masterpiece, La Casa de Bernarda Alba explores themes of repression, passion and conformity through the depiction of a matriarch’s domination of her five daughters. The final play from Spain’s most famous playwright was completed by Lorca in 1936, shortly before being shot by firing squad by troops loyal to Franco.

The play was banned in Spain until 1963, because of its political implications and because the behaviour and language of the characters was regarded as shockingly immoral.
