“The ordinary people, like you and me, know something more than all the ... politicians put together.” (Act III Sc3)
If it’s Coward it must be beaded dresses, cigarette holders, crystal clear cocktails and sharp, witty epigrams. But not this time.
The play covers twenty years in the life of the lower middle-class Gibbons family – from Frank Gibbons’ return from the trenches in 1919 to 1939 as another World War looms. Set in their suburban house in Clapham, it chronicles the family’s births, weddings, scandals and deaths, commenting on the key social and political events of the period - leaving little doubt of Coward’s self-professed patriotism and his belief in “This Happy Breed”.
