Directors Application Information

PlayThe Red Lion by Patrick Marber
VenueStudio
Performance Dates22nd – 29th January 2022
Rehearsal PeriodNovember 2021 – January 2022
Director’s BriefFirst performed at the National Theatre in 2015, the play is darkly humorous and offers the actors and director much to explore. The Financial Times review of the original production said ‘Marber’s beautiful play…slides its way into all sorts of emotional territory, exploring paternity, belonging, pain and loss: lost years, lost potential, lost purpose. This is a tender, very touching play about hope, and, above all, talent – that rare and fragile flash of genius – and why we prize it so.’

The play is a three-hander and all the action takes place in the tatty changing room of a non-league football club. This is a studio production so it will need a staging that uses the space imaginatively to create a sense of place without building a box set.

This production needs a director with a clear vision and experience of working with actors to find and create believable characters.

PlayThe Lovely Bones by Bryony Lavery and Alice Sebold
VenueMain House
Performance Dates29th Jan – 5th Feb 2022
Rehearsal PeriodNov 2021 – Jan 2022
Director’s BriefBryony Lavery’s adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel about life after loss requires imaginative staging. The action takes place in multiple locations, both on earth and in heaven. Several actors in an ensemble company are required to multi-role, including playing dogs. One dog, in particular, Holiday, is an important character in the story. There are characters who are children but they should be played by adults.

This production needs a director who can tell a compelling story in a big space with a large cast. Experience of working with an ensemble and of physical theatre would be an advantage. You need to be able to put your stamp on the script and to be able to work well with technical sections to create a powerful spectacle for the audience.

PlayA Number by Caryl Churchill
VenueStudio
Performance Dates19th Feb – 5th March 2022
Rehearsal PeriodDec 2021 – Feb 2022
Director’s BriefHuman cloning is the subject of this beguiling hour-long psychological thriller that blends topical scientific speculation with a stunning portrait of the relationship between fathers and their sons.

A Number is a two-hander; one actor plays a father, Salter, the other plays his sons. The setting is described as ‘where Salter lives’.

This play will be performed alternately with Swallow by Stef Smith as part of ‘Studio Fortnight’. The premise of Studio Fortnight is to present two stripped back studio pieces in a black box without any built set. Simple furniture from the theatre’s stock can be used.

The two directors of A Number and Swallow will need to agree on the audience configuration, which will be the same set-up for both shows.

This production needs a director who is excited by the challenge of letting this brilliant play speak for itself and by working with two actors to explore the complex ideas and characters contained within it. You’ll need to be able to work well with another director on the logistics of Studio Fortnight, and with the technical sections.

PlaySwallow by Stef Smith
VenueStudio
Performance Dates19th Feb – 5th March 2022
Rehearsal PeriodDec 2021 – Feb 2022
Director’s Brief‘Who said smashing things up was a bad idea?’ Three strangers are about to face their demons head on. Balanced precariously on the tipping point, they might just be able to save one another – if they can only overcome their urge to self-destruct. Painful yet playful, poignant but uplifting, Swallow takes a long, hard look at the extremes of everyday life.

The play is a three-hander. Three intertwining monologues weave and wend their way together in this lyrical yet down to earth piece about loneliness, connection and the desire for change.

This play will be performed alternately with A Number by Caryl Churchill as part of ‘Studio Fortnight’. The premise of Studio Fortnight is to present two stripped back studio pieces in a black box without any built set. Simple furniture from the theatre’s stock can be used.

The two directors of Swallow and A Number will need to agree on the audience configuration, which will be the same set-up for both shows.

This production needs a director who is excited by the challenge of exploring this poetic, challenging piece and by working with three actors to explore the complex ideas and characters contained within it. You’ll need to be able to work well with another director on the logistics of Studio Fortnight, and with the technical sections.

PlayMuch Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare
VenueStudio
Performance Dates2nd – 9th April 2022
Rehearsal PeriodFeb – April 2022
Director’s BriefMuch Ado About Nothing is a comedy about misunderstandings, love and deception. Soldiers return from war; it could be set now, in the 1590s, or anywhere in between.

This production needs a director who can realise a concept and setting that serves the script, rather than trying to shoehorn the script into the concept. You’ll need to be able to be able to manage a large cast and to work with them on the delivery and meaning of Shakespeare’s language.

Much Ado continues to be one of Shakespeare’s most performed plays and features on current GCSE exam syllabi. It’s likely therefore that some of our audiences will be teenagers studying the play; your vision needs to sit within a framework they will recognise and engage with.

This production needs an experienced director with a clear vision for the piece, the ability to work with actors on the text, and strong communication and liaison with the technical sections.

PlayLittle Shop of Horrors by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken
VenueMain House
Performance Dates30th April – 7th May 2022
Rehearsal PeriodJan – April 2022
Director’s BriefThe meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” – after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it, BLOOD. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out of this world origins and intent towards global domination!

This production needs a director who can tell this well-known and much-loved story with flair and attention to detail. You will need to be able to work with the actors, the musical director, possibly puppeteers and maybe a choreographer too, to create B movie magic to an A* standard in the Main House.  One of the challenges of the piece is Audrey II itself so please describe your vision for ‘the plant’ in your submission, along with the visual style you envisage for the production.

PlayThe Pitmen Painters by Lee Hall
VenueStudio
Performance Dates14th – 21st May 2022
Rehearsal PeriodFeb-May 2022
Director’s BriefIn 1934, a group of Ashington miners and a dental mechanic hired a professor from Newcastle University to teach an Art Appreciation evening class. Unable to understand each other, they embarked on one of the most unusual experiments in British art as the pitmen learned to become painters. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends, their work was taken for prestigious collections and they were celebrated throughout the British art world; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine.

The piece has cast of 9. The action takes place between 1934 and 1947 in multiple locations. The piece relies heavily on the use of projection to serve various functions. It’s written to be staged on a largely bare stage with chairs and easels as the main furniture plus a few other pieces. Other than projection screens, there will not be any ‘built’ set for this studio production.

This production needs a director who can work with actors to bring out the characters and humour of Lee Hall’s script. You’ll need a sense of the period and the ability to work well with technical sections, especially AV and wardrobe, to get the look of the piece right.

PlayLady Windermere’s Fan by Oscar Wilde
VenueStudio and Summer Tour (multiple venues)
Performance Dates18th– 25th June 2022 and various tour dates in July (exact dates TBC)
Rehearsal PeriodApril – June 20222
Director’s BriefLady Windermere has a happy marriage – or, at least, that’s what she believes until one of London society’s gossips, the Duchess of Berwick, arrives with her daughter to voice her suspicions about an affair Lord Windermere appears to be having. Employing the witty dialogue, social satire and outrageous paradox for which he is still remembered, Wilde’s play shows us the destructiveness of gossip and superficial judgement, examines the ambiguous sexual morality and gender politics at the heart of the British ruling class, while simultaneously challenging our perceptions of what constitutes a ‘good woman’.

Leading the Crescent’s summer tour is a fantastic experience and brings its own unique challenges and rewards with it. You’ll need a creative, imaginative approach to staging this witty, satirical play in both the Studio and the open air without a lot of set, and ideally you’ll have had some experience of directing and of outdoor theatre (this could be as an actor, production assistant or director). You’ll also need to be prepared to cut the text down to a maximum 2 hour running time; support from the Arts Management Team can be provided for this non-negotiable part of the process. A great outdoor Crescent tour performance needs bold characterisation, visual storytelling, strong diction and projection from the actors, and lovely costumes.

PlayClybourne Park by Bruce Norris
VenueStudio
Performance Dates9th – 16th July 2022
Rehearsal PeriodMay – July 2022
Director’s BriefIn 1959, Russ and Bev are moving to the suburbs of Chicago after the tragic death of their son and have sold their house to the neighbourhood’s first black family. Decades later, the roles are reversed when a young white couple buys the lot in what is now a predominantly black neighbourhood, signalling a new wave of gentrification. In both instances, a community showdown takes place – are the same issues festering beneath the floorboards fifty years on?

The Guardian review of the London premiere of the play described it as ‘such a combustible mix of race, territory and property prices that it is like a hand grenade lobbed into the stalls, primed to explode in the second act.’

Act One of the play takes place in 1959 and Act 2 in 2009, in the same room of the same house. The piece calls for some built set (and for cosmetic changes to the set in the interval!) as the house itself plays an important role in the drama. Most of the actors in a cast of 7-8 are required to play two different roles in the two acts, which brings challenges.

This production needs a director who can work with the actors to bring out both the characters and their relationships, and the biting, provocative humour of the piece. You’ll need a manageable vision for how to stage the play in the studio and a desire to get your teeth into a play that should leave its audiences both challenged and entertained.
