Want to be involved but don’t want to act? There’s always plenty to do backstage – see our membership page for details.

Non-members are welcome but please read the notes on this page.

Membership Commitment – as part of your membership we expect all members to support the theatre by assisting with our Front of House Operations when the theatre is open for performances by either Stewarding, working on the Bar or Coffee Bar. We term this as a “Duty” and members are expected to do eight “Duties” per membership year.

New Members will be asked to do three duties before the run of any production they are cast in. Existing members should ensure that they have fulfilled their quota of duties before auditioning or they may not be considered for a production. All members should do a minimum of three duties within a four month period.

The Crescent Theatre is committed to the promotion of equal opportunities within the theatre, and affiliated projects, through the way we manage the venue and provide services to the community. No person should experience discrimination or lack of opportunities on the grounds of gender, race, religion, age, sexual orientation or disability. In the provision of services and in regards to the membership and visiting companies, the Crescent Theatre is committed to promoting equal opportunities for everyone.  Click here for our Statement of Commitment on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. If you need any reasonable adjustments to enable you to access an audition, you can let us know in advance by filling in an online audition form.

Please note the opportunities below are Unpaid

Please note

While auditions are intended for members, non-members are welcome to attend on the understanding that, if successful in reading for a part, you would be expected to become a member of the theatre. This entitles you to take part in all theatre activities and to concessionary ticket prices. In return you will be expected to attend all rehearsals and performances and to undertake your required allocation of front of house duties. Your membership subscription must be paid by the end of the second rehearsal. Membership fees for a year are £60 (£25 if unwaged). More details on Crescent Membership can be found in the membership pages.

Unless stated otherwise, the venue for all readings and auditions is the Crescent Theatre.

The story Charles Dickens might have written after drinking too much gin…

Follow half-orphan Pip’s extraordinary exploits with sisters Pippa and Poppy and best friend Harry Biscuit, as they attempt to escape the calculating clutches of the dastardly Mr Gently Benevolent, defeat the hideous Hardthrasher siblings, and deflect disaster at every turn! Will evil be vanquished by virtue? Can love triumph over hate?

Mark Evans’ stage play Bleak Expectations is a hilarious, chaotic caper, featuring dastardly villains, preposterous names, pulse-quickening romances, heart-rending death scenes, and definitely, probably, hopefully, a happy ending.

I am looking for an energetic and imaginative ensemble cast to bring this fabulous fast paced comedy to the Crescent stage. There are many different roles of different ages and genders, many of the cast will play several roles.

Rehearsals will take place over the summer months of July, August, working towards opening in September. I understand that many of you may have holidays booked, please don’t let this stop you auditioning. Due to the nature of summer holidays and people’s availability there is room to work around holiday commitments. If you’d like to discuss this further, I’m happy to do so (email address at the bottom of the page).

Rehearsals vary slightly over the rehearsal period but mainly stick to the pattern of Monday and Wednesday evenings, and Sunday mornings.

The show is based upon the ensemble playing multiple roles. The ages are just a guide. These roles aren’t set in stone and may change when I see different combinations during the auditions but it is regularly cast as follows:

ROLES:

  • Agnes Bin, Flora Dies-Early (FEMALE 40’s and above)
  • Thomas Bin, Bakewell Havertwitch, Broadly Fecund (MALE 40’s and above)
  • Harry Biscuit, Skinflint Parsimonious (MALE 20’s and above)
  • Pip Bin (MALE 20’s and above)
  • Gently Benevolent (MALE 30’s and above)
  • Sir Philip Bin (MALE 50’s and above)
  • Pippa Bin, Mrs Convenient Exposition (FEMALE 20’s and above)
  • Poppy Bin, Ripely Fecund (FEMALE 20’s and above)
  • The Hardthrashers (MALE 30’s and above)

Additional roles will be played by members of the cast.

All the actors will potentially engage in the following forms of intimacy/physical contact as part of the action:

  • Hugging
  • Holding hands, arms around shoulders, backslapping
  • Kissing on the cheek and the hand
  • Passionate embraces, possibly including simulated passionate kissing (tbc)
  • Fighting – pushing, pulling, grappling

There is no nudity in the show and the Crescent’s Intimacy Guidelines will be followed.

Auditions will take place on Sunday 16th June at 10am and Tuesday 18th June at 7pm.

You will be asked to read scenes from the play, they will be chosen for you based upon the roles you wish to be considered for and roles I think you may be suitable for.

Audition scenes are below.

Rehearsals begin 30th June. Rehearsals vary slightly over the rehearsal period but mainly stick to the pattern of Monday and Wednesday evenings, and Sunday mornings.
